Why We Went Back: A Review of the Popular Mamaide Coffee in Sapporo

Our Second Visit to Mamaide Coffee Roasters, Sapporo

My husband and I visited a cafe that we really liked, so when my parents came to Sapporo, we took them to Mamaide cafe.

The cafe is quite popular and has great reviews, so we expected a wait, but both times we visited, we were seated right away. However, when we left, people were already starting to line up.

Warm and inviting Atmosphere - Cozy Details and Thoughtful Touches

The cafe has a warm, cozy atmosphere with a wood-and-white interior that feels inviting and natural. Although it’s not a huge space, the high ceiling lends it an airy, open feel. Cute little decorations throughout the space add to its warmth — the kind of cozy, Instagram-worthy aesthetic that many people would love.

Behind the counter, there’s a small area where you can sample coffee for free, and next to the register, they sell a few kinds of cookies and scones. My husband placed the order while I went upstairs to grab a seat, but he came up shortly after — turns out, the staff kindly delivered our drinks to the table.

The cafe has two floors; if you want to sit upstairs, you’ll need to take off your shoes before going up.

Near the staircase, there’s a station where you can add sugar syrup or other options to your drink.
There are two seating areas upstairs. The right room has only floor-style seating, while the left room offers both floor tables and sofa-style seats.

Left side of the second floor – Along with low tables, there are also taller bench seats. Personally, the height felt a bit awkward and less comfortable for me.

Review of coffee and Toast Set - Great Coffee

The coffee here is excellent — rich in flavour and served in a large mug with a mermaid illustration. The portion is generous, and both the quality and quantity are satisfying. We originally came just for coffee, but ended up trying their morning toast set, available from 8 to 11 a.m. There are two options: the basic butter toast set or the cheese toast set, both served with a boiled egg. The toast was soft and moist with a good portion size — nothing overly special, but a great choice if you want a light breakfast with your coffee.

My favourite - The Macha scone

I personally prefer dry, crumbly desserts like scones and cookies over soft cakes, so I ordered the matcha scone — and absolutely loved it. It had a pleasant dryness with a slightly tender centre, and the matcha flavour was well-balanced, not too bitter or too sweet. It was so good that I ordered it again on my second visit with my parents.

Final Thoughts - Good start to the day

If you’re looking for a cafe near Sapporo Station with great coffee, a warm atmosphere, and lots of photo-worthy corners, I highly recommend this one. The staff are incredibly friendly and even come out to see you off with a smile — a small gesture that makes for such a lovely start to the morning.
