Location & Atmosphere
The restaurant is located in the small food alley near Hakodate Station — just a few minutes on foot, making it perfect to stop by after sightseeing.
👉It’s open from 5:00 pm to 11:30 pm and closed on Mondays.The place is small, with two tables for two and one table with four and about six bar seats, but it has a warm, relaxed local vibe. The staff can speak a little English and provide an English menu, which is a big plus. They also kindly explain which sauce goes best with each meat and even check if everything’s okay during your meal.

How They Cook Genghis Khan
Traditionally, Genghis Khan (Jingisukan) is grilled on a dome-shaped cast-iron pan, with lamb in the centre and vegetables around the edges. The meat’s oil drips down, naturally seasoning the vegetables.However, at Sakupa Matupa, they do it the opposite way — the meat is placed on top of the vegetables, allowing steam from the veggies to soften the lamb. This unique method creates a tender, juicy “steamed Genghis Khan” that feels lighter and more delicate than the usual grilled version.
Menu
They offer two recommended set menus, both of which are available in English.
1. Genghis Khan Course (Lamb Course) – 3,190 yen (tax included)
→ raw lamb, premium lamb, pot pickled lamb, and a vegetable plate
2. Venison & Lamb Course – 3,850 yen (tax included)
→ venison, raw lamb, premium lamb, vegetable plate, and one drink included (Choose from draft beer, wine, lemon sour, highball, nihonshu, or soft drinks.)
👉You can share one set between two people, but each person must order at least one drink. Rice is an optional add-on for both menus.
What We Ordered
We chose Set 2 (Venison & Lamb Course) to try the venison, and we also added pot-pickled lamb Genghis Khan and salted squid (ika-shiokara) as extra dishes.My drink (lemon sour) was included in the set, and my husband ordered an extra soft drink.
The staff handled all the grilling. When they said “ready!”, it was time to eat — the meat was lightly grilled, not overcooked, and tasted incredibly fresh. The handmade dipping sauce was savoury and paired perfectly with every cut.
Each table also has salt, pepper, wasabi, and garlic sauce, so you can customise the flavour to your liking.

Taste Review
Raw Lamb:
Soft, juicy, and free of any strong smell. Even those who usually avoid lamb would enjoy it. Lightly grilled on both sides, it stayed tender and flavorful. The staff recommended enjoying it with the house-made sauce — delicious!
Premium Lamb:
Venison:
It was my first time trying venison, and it was surprisingly mild — no gamey smell, just clean and smooth with a nice texture. You could really tell how fresh it was.
Pot Pickled Lamb (added separately):
Served after the set course. The mild sauce slightly toned down the lamb’s aroma while keeping its natural flavour. Great option even for those not used to eating lamb.
Vegetable Plate:
Includes cabbage, bean sprouts, pumpkin, capsicum, onion, and carrot. The vegetables soak up all the flavour from the meat, making them naturally seasoned and super tasty.
Drinks:
My lemon sour was just okay — it was pretty mild and not strong enough for me. I’d recommend the draft beer rather than a highball or sour.
Service & Tips
The staff grills all the meat for you, which ensures the perfect timing and taste. However, since they handle all tables, it can get a bit slow during busy hours — so better to book in advance.
