Is Costco Worth it for 2 People? 2026 Australia Membership Review

Costco Membership Guide: Benefits, Prices, and Is It Worth It?

Close UP Costco GoldStar MemberShip Card

Costco is a global members-only warehouse that offers groceries, household essentials, electronics, and even fuel at competitive prices. In this guide, I’ll explain the different types of Costco memberships, who they’re best for, and why my family continues to renew ours every year.

Costco Membership Options

According to the official website, Costco offers four types of memberships worldwide. Prices may vary slightly by country, but in Australia, the following options are available:

  • Gold Star Membership ($65/year): Best for individuals or small households. Includes one free household card.
  • Business Membership ($65/year): Designed for business owners. You can add up to six additional cardholders ($65 each).
  • Gold Star Executive Membership ($130/year): Includes 2% annual cashback on eligible purchases.
  • Business Executive Membership ($130/year): Combines Business + Executive benefits.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: The Executive Break-Even Point
If you spend more than $3,250 a year (about $270 a month), the 2% cashback covers the $65 price difference between Gold Star and Executive. If you spend more, Costco is practically paying you to shop!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Household benefit: Each primary member can nominate one household member (living at the same address and over 18) to receive their own card at no extra cost.

Costco Guest Policy: Can I Bring Friends?

Officially, Costco members may bring up to two guests when shopping. However, guests are not allowed to pay with their own card – only the member can make purchases.

In practice, many stores are flexible with this rule, but keep in mind that membership is non-transferable and photo verification is now checked at entry.

❗[April 2026 update about entry]

As of 2026, Costco has significantly tightened its entry checks. You are now required to scan your physical or digital membership card at the entrance scanners before you can enter.

  • No Screenshots: Using a screenshot of your digital or physical card is strictly prohibited. The app must be opened live to scan.
  • No Card Sharing: Membership is non-transferable. Sharing your card with others is against policy and strictly monitored at the door.
  • Photo Verification: If your physical card lacks a clear photo, or if you are activating your digital card for the first time, you may be asked to show a valid government ID or visit the membership desk to update your photo.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Tip: Make sure your "face" is ready and your official photo is updated before you head in to avoid being stopped at the entrance!

Why Our 2-Person Household Renews Costco Every Year

My husband has been a Costco member for over 8 years. Since our household is just the two of us, we don’t buy a lot of fresh food in bulk. Costco’s inventory changes frequently (the famous 'treasure hunt' experience!), but these are the staples we can almost always find and rely on.

  • Kirkland Signature Bath Tissue: Unbeatable quality and quantity for the price.
  • Kirkland Blanched Almond Flour: Our top pick for healthy baking; much more affordable than local supermarkets.
  • Frozen Essentials (Berries & Mixed Veggies): Perfect for long-term storage and quick, healthy meals.

Is Costco Fuel Worth It? Real Savings Math (98 Premium)

Costco fuel is significantly cheaper compared to other petrol stations. Prices can be checked online by location.

๐Ÿ’ฌ For example, on 23 January 2025, Costco premium 98 petrol was $200.7, which was 2–22.2 cents cheaper than nearby stations.

Since we own two cars (both requiring 98 premium), here’s the math:

  • Filling up 60L per car per week = 120L total.
  • Average saving of 5 cents per liter = $6 per week saved.
  • Over 52 weeks = $312 yearly savings.

Even if you only fill up once a fortnight, the savings alone more than cover the $65 annual membership fee. For us, it’s a no-brainer.

Top 4 Hidden Costco Benefits You Shouldn't Miss

1.Generous Return Policy

  • Most items can be returned if you’re not satisfied.
  • Membership fees are also refundable if you decide Costco isn’t for you.
2.Worldwide Access
  • Your membership works at any Costco branch around the globe.
3.Bulk Shopping for Families & Businesses
  • Perfect for families who buy in bulk, or business owners stocking up.
4.Services Beyond Groceries
  • Some Costco locations also offer optical services, hearing aids, tyre centres, and photo printing.
  • Availability depends on your local warehouse.

The Verdict: Is a Costco Membership Worth the $65 Fee?

Costco membership is worth it if:

  • You have multiple cars and use Costco petrol.
  • You shop frequently or in large quantities.
  • You run a business that benefits from bulk discounts.
  • You want cashback rewards from the Executive Membership.

On the other hand, if you live far from a Costco warehouse or rarely buy in bulk, you may not get as much value.

For us, Costco membership easily pays for itself through fuel savings alone. Add in the high-quality Kirkland Signature products, generous returns, and cashback opportunities, and it’s a deal that works for both households and businesses.

๐Ÿ‘‰ If you’ve been considering it, I recommend giving Costco membership a try – with the refund guarantee, there’s nothing to lose.
